History & History Related Items
Known as the Maple City, for its trees. La Porte is the County seat of La Porte (French for The Door, compare with Door County, Wisconsin) County. It was named for a break in the forest atop the Valparaiso Terminal Moraine, where the glacier that scoured the Lake Michigan basin stopped, and through which settlers passed westward into the Calumet River valley, the route from the south being blocked by the Grand Kankakee Marsh (now drained).
