The first settlers came into the Little Wabash River around 1814. The area remained rural and had little growth until the 1850's when the railroad came through. The area experienced a big "boom" as stores and hotels opened with the coming of many new residents. The name was changed from Broughton to effingham in 1859. Effingham was named to honor a British Lord who would not fight the colonists during the Revolutionary War. Many years later, a second boom was experienced when the Interstate Highway system brought a crossroad to Effingham. The I-57 and the I-70 intersect in Effingham.
