History & History Related Items

Before settlement, several Indian tribes lived in this area, including the Sioux, Pottawattamie, Ottawa and Chippewas. After 1935, most were removed west of the Mississippi River. The area remained open with mostly farming areas rather than residential areas. It wasn't until the 1950's that much of the area was divided up into five acre parcels. Voting for incorporation occurred on 20 October 1956 with a close vote in favor of incorporation. The official incorporation was on 30 October 1956 for the new Village of Harvester. The original 1 square mile area was increased by annexation of several nearby areas, including the area known as Burr Ridge. This area was developed by the Busby family. The name came from the stand of burr oak trees along County Line Road. The name of the village was changed to Burr Ridge in August, 1962. The burr oak leaf became the city emblem.

Burr Ridge has the distinction of becoming one of the 300 wealthiest communities in the country. They are known for their preservation movements for their wetlands, woodlands and other open areas. The village has become a planned community with managed, low-density growth.
