The motto for Buffalo Center has always been Home of the first Consolidated School West of the Mississippi. Back in 1959, a sign was added to the welcome signs on each end of town stating that Buffalo Center was Home of 1959 Miss North Iowa, Joyce Ann Schutter.
The signs at each end of town were updated in the 1970's with a fiberglass 3-D buffalo on each one.
