The first settlers came to LaGrange in 1826 and by 1828 LaGrange was incorporated. The name "LaGrange" was from French General LaFayette. His home was named LaGrange. He came here to visit the Governor, George M. Troup and while here toured the entire state. The General said the area reminded him of his homeland and estate in France. Later, when a name was being chosen for this main town in Troup County, LaGrange was met with enthusiasm.
