Footsteps of History

The American Civil War

Clarkton, Missouri

A battle took place on Oct 23, 1862 in Clarkton. Also a small skirmish took place on Oct 28, 1862. In fact, a number of smaller battles took place here around this time with much of the town destroyed by the end of the war.

Note about Robert V. Richardson, a general in the Confederate Army. After the war was over, he returned to his home in Memphis, Tennessee where he worked in construction. One one of his trips, he stopped at a tavern in Clarkton and was shot and killed on 5 January 1870. No one knew who shot him and he died the next day.
