When founded in 1880, Major St. Claire Abrams hoped the city would be the capital of Florida. Though his dream was never realized, Tavares did become the county seat in 1887 and has remained a major force in county government since that time.

The Lake County Historical Museum consists of an eclectic group of artifacts typical of the people who pioneered and grew Lake County, as well as Native American and Spanish relics. Exhibits are added and changed regularly. Admission is always free.

Tavares has served as the County Seat for Lake County, Florida since 1888. The downtown, which lies on the shores of Lake Dora, has the small town charm lacking in most cities. Picturesque Wooton Park sits only one block from Main Street and offers families everything from picnic pavilions to boat ramps. Tavares is also home to the Dora Canal known as one of the most beautiful waterways in the world.
Meanwhile, Tavares boasts a bustling economic climate with national, regional and local businesses located along the Highway 441 corridor and in the downtown business district. Tavares is the perfect hometown with access to major lakes and easy commutes to Florida's Major attractions and beaches.
