"Proceedings" of the Grand Lodge of Florida, Free & Accepted Masons
St. Andrews Lodge No. 1 was formed by the 31st Regiment of Foot, a British Unit stationed in the Fort of Pensacola in 1763. Upon its departure, the civilian members of the lodge petitioned the Provincial Lodge of East Florida in St. Augustine and continued working until the re-occupation by the Spaniards under General Galvez in 1770. They re-located to Charleston, SC, and were chartered by the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania until the Grand Lodge of South Carolina was formed at which time they became St. Andrew's Lodge No.10. They became inactive in 1889. Albert Mackey, the great Masonic writer, was a member of St. Andrew's. All of this is documented in the Proceedings of the Grand Lodge of Florida.
Pensacola continued to be very active in Freemasonry and now has many lodges as Freemasonry is very active here. We also have the York Rite and the Scottish Rite as well as Hadji Shrine Temple and the Grotto, not mention affiliated organizations such as the Eastern Star.
Thus, Pensacola was the first location of a Masonic lodge West of the Appalachicola River in the Territory of West Florida which stretched all the way to Natchez, MS.
The above information and documents are on file in the Grand Lodge of Florida, F.&A.M. and the New York Lodge of Research
