History & History Related Items

The first to explore the area was Captain William H. Fulford who came in 1881. Later, when the Florida East Coast Railroad laid its lines, numerous spots along the line were developed into small towns and Fulford purchased some of the land in this area. Lafe Allen and an associate purchased Fulford's land in 1912 hoping to create the "perfect city." It was known as Fulford-by-the-Sea at that time. Other early names were Merle C. Tebbetts, president of the Florida Cities Finance Company and Carl Fisher, who spearheaded the Miami-Fulford Speedway. In 1926, a great hurricane came in and demolished raceway and most of the town. In the aftermath of this disaster, hoping to obtain more assistance, the citizens formed the town of Fulford and then incorporated in 1927 as the city of Fulford. In 1931, the name was changed from Fulford to North Miami Beach. The new charter and the annexation of beachfront property spurred the change.
