Settled in 1845, Brooksville was first known as Melendez. Later, it was merged with a neighboring community, Pierceville. It wasn't until 1856 that the town was finally named Brooksville to honor Preston Brooks. Brooks was a South Carolina Congressman who was a supporter of State Rights. Brooksville was also the county seat at that time. It was officially incorporated on 13 October 1880.

The Hernando Heritage Museum puts on many events, is open Tuesday thru Saturday 12:00 to 3:00 for tours and accepts memberships to the museum, all of which help raise money to keep the doors open.
