History & History Related Items

When the Rio Grande Railroad built their lines through western Colorado, a section house they found was named Colorow after a Native American Ute Indian Chief. However, they later learned he was not a Ute, but a Comanche. When the first Post office was opened in that section house, theynamed it after the post master, a Mr. Brown. The small local community felt it was confusing to have one name for the town and one for the post office so they voted to choose just one name. The new railroad agent there, a Mr. Finney, suggested Olathe after the town he had come from. When the vote was taken, Olathe had won. An interesting fact is that Olathe is a Shawnee word for Beautiful, but the local Indians are the Utes.
