Fountain was named an All-America City by the National Civic League
Fountain was chosen as America's Millennium City by the New York Times. This designation was based on the city's location to national census statistics and certain research on what American life was really like at the turn of the last century (based on 1997 statistics).
1988, 14 May
The famous “Blast” occurred on this date in 1888 when a freight train with tons of explosives and a passenger train crashed into each other. The wreck killed three people, but others may have died from injuries later that were not attributed to the incident. The explosion destroyed several buildings in town and carved out a large crater in the ground forty feet in diameter and 15 feet deep. Two vagrants were given the blame for the crash. They had been kicked off the freight train just north of Fountain. It was later found that they had murdered one of the passengers, Frank Shipman. They hid his body in one of the train cars and then disconnected the car along with the others behind it, including the car with explosives. The loose cars picked up speed going toward Fountain while a passenger train was coming up toward Colorado Springs. Luckily, the conductor saw the runaway cars and a number of passengers were able to escape the train and injury. As it was, 28 people were injured. The vagrants were never found nor charged with the crime. Today the “Blast” is remembered with an annual street dance in the downtown city hall plaza each summer.
