Dove Creek, Colorado has been known as "the Pinto Bean Capitol of the World." One reason that pinto beans grow very well there is that the soil has a very high iron content, and is red in color. The local water supply is sometimes a carrier of minute bits of this red deposit, which will stain laundry a faint reddish color. Local legend says that if a person gets the red soil of Dove Creek between their toes, they will be compelled to return to Dove Creek. Dove Creek and the surrounding area are located above a large deposit of uranium, which is now somewhat too expensive to mine commercially. The townis approximately 8 miles from the state line with Utah. A somewhat scandalous book titled "The Crow Flies Crooked" was once written by the editor of the local newspaper, The Dove Creek Press. The storyof the book was fiction, but based upon the personalities of actual local residents. The book aroused such distress in the local residents that they purchased as many copies of the book as they could locate, and destroyed them.
