History & History Related Items

When the community first began in 1857, it was known as Bakersville after a local resident, William W. Baker. They quickly learned that their name, Bakersville, and the larger town of Bakersfield were being confused, so they needed to change their name. Given its location on the Tuolumne River with no bridge crossing, the local ford of the river there was well known. Hence, in 1870, the name of Waterford was created for the new name.
