History & History Related Items

The city developed around the San Juan Capistrano mission. The mission is famous for the swallows who leave on Oct 23 (St. John's day) and return each year on March 19. (St. Joseph's day) The mission was founded by Father Junipero Serra and named for St. John of Capistrano. The Serra chapel is one of the oldest buildings still in use in the entire state. It is known as the "Jewel of the Missions" because it is such a beautiful mission and area.
