Some say the town was named by Mr. M. L. Wicks, a real estate developer who named it after his former home of Lancaster, Pennsylania. Others say a Mr. Purnell, an employee of the Southern Pacific Railroad, named the town, but no one knows for what reason since the records were destroyed by fire in 1906.
