Before being founded in 1907, Hughson was mainly a ranch belonging to Hiram Hughson who arrived here in 1882. The railroad purchased some land from him for new tracks and the station began to be called Hughson Stop. As the surrounding areas began to grow, land prices also began to increase. Hughson developed his land through the Hughson Town Company. His land and that of John Tully, a nearby landowner, were to make up the area for the town of Hughson.
