The Hawthorne Land Company was founded around 1905 by Benjamin I. Harding and Harry Dana Lombard when they purchase their property here. They proposed to build a town site of 80 acres where barley fields were then in place. Hawthorne was actually named for author, Nathaniel Hawthorne. Harding's daughter, Laurine Harding Woolwine, shared her birthday with Hawthorne and proposed the name for the new community. Hawthorne is both a residential and industrial area.
