Location

west of Tulare from Hwy 99 in the California central valley midway between San Francisco, 215 miles to the north, and Los Angeles, 215 miles to the south. It is located in the north central portion of the county, the city is 32 miles south of Fresno. Other nearby communities include Visalia, Home Garden, Armona, Laton, Lemoore, Traver, Kingsburg, Goshen and Stratford.

Climate


moderate with hot, dry summersand cool winters. One of the hallmarks the the winter months is the dense Tule fog. Most rain falls from November through April with an average annual rainfall amount of 8.97 inches.

History & History Related Items

Hanford was named for James Madison Hanford who was an executive with the Southern Pacific Railroad. Once the rails were laid, the sleepy sheep camp began to grow and develop into a town. The area experienced a number of fires that devastated large areas. The need for fire protection was one of the reasons for incorporation in 1891. Also in 1891, an electrical generation plant opened bringing with it electric lights!

The Mussel Slough Tragedy occurred in 1880 in a dispute over land titles. See historical events for more information.

Hanford is known for "China Alley." This is a 100 year-old Chinatown which was preserved by Chef Winy's family. Many famous people, including US Presidents, Eisenhower and Truman, Mao Tse-Tung and Chiang Kai-shek have eaten here.

Hanford government operates under the provisions of the State Constitution and Statues as a general law city. It has a council-manager form of government. The city council has five members who are elected to four year terms. The city manager is appointed by the city council.

1880
The Mussel Slough Tragedy

A terrible gun fight occurred in 1880 here when settlers and the Southern Pacific Railroad were involved in a dispute over the title to land. The battle took place on a farm about five miles northwest of town. Seven men were killed in the gunfight. It became known as the Mussel Slough Tragedy.
