Granted in 1784 to Juan Jose Dominguez by the Spanish Crown, the 75,000+ acre tract was called Rancho San Pedro.
Compton was named for Griffith D. Compton (1820-1905). He led a group of families, searching for a more mild climate, to the area in 1867. Compton was badly damaged by an earthquake in 1933. Compton is the 2nd oldest city in the county and the 7th to be incorporated.
