Spanish settlers named the city for the Carmelite Friars who came with them when they arrived in the area. The Carmel area is a haven for the artistic community and has been since before the turn of the century (1900).

At the Carmel Mission Basilica , see the burial place of Father Junipero Serra, the father of California missions. The mission, second in the series of California Missions, was built in 1771. It was also called the headquarters for Father Serra. The official name of the mission is Basilica of Mission San Carlos Borromeo del Rio Carmel.
