The area now known as Bethel Island, was defined in a deed dated April 23, 1894, and is identified as: "certain tracts of swamp and overflowed land in Township Two <2> North of Range Three <3> East of Mount Diablo Base and Meridian, in the County of Contra Costa, State of California" The Island was to be divided between the following owners:
B.D.Murphy: 400 acres Bethel Island is a resort community. Vehicles come to the island via a single two-lane bridge over Dutch Slough.

Some of the annual events in Bethel Island include the Frozen Bun Run on New Year's Day, 50's Bash each August, Fishing Derby during Thanksgiving Week in November and the Lighted Boat Christmas Parade in December.

The levees were completed in 1901. The approximately 3400 acres of Bethel Island flooded several times in 1907, 1908, 1909, and 1911. Between 1940 and 1945, many of these holdings were subdivided, new roads constructed (Taylor Road, Stone Road), and the levee roads were closed to vehicle traffic.
