Marana means a thicket or jungle in Spanish and was the name was chosen by the railroad workers when they encountered the heavy brush while building the railroad lines. It was first inhabited by Native Americans. The area didn't have much development until the late 1800's when the Southern Pacific Railroad put the town on its maps.
