Carefree was founded in the 1950's as a planned community. It is known for one of the largest sundials in the western hemisphere. Sundials in India and Australia are said to be larger, the one in India being almost 1/2 acre in size. The sundial is 90 feet in diameter and made of steel and copper. It was designed by John Yellot and Joe Wong for K.T. Palmer in 1959. It also is known for the unusual rock formations.

Attractions
Bartlett Lake is about 17 miles east of town. Many outdoor recreation sites are located here.
Along with the large sundial, the world's largest Kachina doll is also in Carefree. This dollis 39 feet tall and is about six miles outside of Carefree in an area known as Tonto Hills.
