in southeastern Arizona in the San Pedro Valley, about 46 miles south of Tucson. Other nearby communities include St David, Whetstone, Huachuca City, Tombstone, Vail, Sierra Vista, Elgin and Sonoita.

The city was founded in 1880 when the Southern Pacific Railroad came through. It was named after Judge William B. Benson, a friend of the president of the railroad.
