Climate


tropical with moderately warm temperatures in the summer and cool temperatures in the winter. High humidity, especially in summer, causes it to feel hotter than it really is during the summer months. Due to its location on the Gulf of Mexico, the area is prone to hurricanes. A number of strong hurricanes over the years have caused great damage to the community but residents have always rebounded from the disasters.

History & History Related Items

Before the building of Fort Morgan here in the 1500's by the Spanish, the area was populated with Native Americans of several tribes. The fort was rebuilt and was important during the Civil War.

The community has had a violent history from hurricanes being the recipient of many heavy blows by them. The entire beachfront was destroyed by Hurricane Frederic in 1979 and numerous other storms affected the city, including Hurricanes Ivan, Dennis and Katrina.
