Early on, Sitka was the seat of Territorial Government. In 1906, the responsibility for government was moved to Juneau where it has since become the State Capital.

The name of Sitka comes from the Tlingit Indian people of this area who used a similar word to describe themselves and where they lived. The word is Shee-Atika, which means "People on the side of Shee.
